"Looking up at the rising expanse before her he thinks to herself, water.
jerked awake by the sound of screeching, the drop in stomach hits as memories rush toward the blown open doorway who now dangles from its hinges.
shuffling to the kitchen, glancing up as the tv plugs itself into the outlet, she tunes into what the weatherman is saying right as he exclaims, "STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THERE IS A MOMENT OF SEPARATION THAT OCCURS IMMEDIATELY AFTER PHYSICAL TRAUMA WHEN THE MIND DISTANCES ITSELF FROM THE FLESH IN ORDER TO DECREASE MENTAL ANGUISH CAUSED BY THE WOUND!!!"
hunching at the table, she looks down at the cereal bowl in front of her, swirls her spoon with her left hand, and crunching loudly thinks, "i need you to tell me your story- to help me get thru mine, so this present moment can turn into a past.” Aloud she murmurs, “I can then use that past as an offer of hope for the next one who needs help getting up.”
How could we not hope to be a lucky one?
The coffee pot to the right looks up at her fondly as it spins on its axis so she can see it from all angles. Mindlessly anxious, she tugs a clump of mascara from her lashes and flicks it at the object.”
Larrie presents Well Adjusted, Hayley Martell’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The show consists of new works by the artist: sculptures incorporating weaving, clay, and plexiglass, as well as video, graphite drawings, and one interactive piece. All come rooted in the concept of healing by re-contextualizing the objects associated with trauma. Martell has created the sculptures in this show by drawing inspiration from familial stories of feminine strength, sacrifice, and the humor needed to overcome intergenerational grief. The drawings are visual representations of one’s inner struggle to reach emotional homeostasis. Well Adjusted utilizes a non-linear narrative structure to offer insight into the mind of someone affected by PTSD. This show recognizes and honors the people and places who help one adjust.
