When I spend days traversing the city in solitude, I watch people and listen in on conversations happening around me. Small movements, blips of passing conversation, loveable or despicable or mundane human behavioral oddities are curated into each performance in this series. GESTURES is a performance that asks the viewer to participate through imagination. Through auditory descriptions and acting, the person presenting the sequence brings characters into the room with them. Each character is based on a real person I’ve witnessed in the world, the conversational elements are all overheard real interactions, some of the sequencing to bring all of these people into one room with us is fabricated.
sample text from Gestures 3:
“two steps from our porch, we pass a woman with a tattoo on her chest that reads "arrogance is bliss" doing her eyebrows in a mirror. Two kids from up the block run toward us yell-asking if we'd like to buy some of the scarves they're selling. "Give us your sales pitch," we tell them...
walking toward the boardwalk, with our silk scarves tied around our heads like patients, we pass an older woman wearing a pale yellow polo (the word "volunteer" is stitched on the left breast in pale blue). She is holding a large worn book, standing in the sun. To no one in particular she mutters, "I guess I do feel weirdly sentimental..."
meandering down the wooden planks in the hot sun, we stop for some Diwa bread and drink at the concessions. The iced tea makes our scalps tighten with each sip...”
